Jefferson Boulevard runs east–west through the middle of Oak Cliff, from the Marsalis / Ewing blocks by the Municipal Center, past the Texas Theatre and the old department-store blocks between Zang and Tyler, out to Hampton, Cockrell Hill and beyond. D Magazine once called it “the most successful urban corridor in Dallas,” and it is still the commercial spine of the city’s Hispanic community: panaderías open before sunrise, dress shops with hand-beaded gowns, taqueros who have held the same corner for decades, and lately a twelve-seat chef’s bistro next to a 1973 Tex-Mex institution. The boulevard’s anchor since 1983: the Sanchez family’s northern-Mexican dining room with cabrito roasting daily, tabletop parrilladas, and mariachis most nights. The newest thing on the boulevard and the smallest: a twelve-seat bistro and art gallery that chef Wyl Lima opened in late 2024 in Gonzalez’s old storefront, grown out of his Oak Cliff supper clubs. Roasted half chicken with plantains, cacio e pepe, grilled mackerel; rotating work by emerging artists on the walls. Mon–Thu 4–10 PM, Fri–Sat 4–11 PM plus Saturday brunch 11–4, Sun 11–5. The 1931 movie palace where Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested in November 1963, run today by Aviation Cinemas as an independent cinema and live venue: first-run and repertory films, a second screen behind the main auditorium, concerts, comedy and festivals, and a full bar in the lobby. The Oak Cliff Cultural Center, two doors from the theatre, is the city-run gallery and classroom space that hosts the boulevard’s art shows and Día de los Muertos programming; Sunset High School (1925) is the neighborhood’s alma mater; and the Oak Cliff Municipal Center on East Jefferson is where permits, courts and city services for this side of the river live.
